Background

James and his wife reside on Chuckatuck Creek in Suffolk and have for over four decades, after growing up in Portsmouth. James received his Bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University (’72) and his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law (’75). James was formerly a principal attorney of the firm of Ferrell, Backus, Sayer, Nicolo & Mobley for 12 years, but most of his career was spent as a solo, general practice attorney before joining Alperin Law in 2021.

Practice Area

In 2021, James joined Alperin Law to maintain a lifetime of clients, many of which had become dear friends over the years. James’s practice areas are now limited to residential and commercial real estate closings and issues, and basic estate planning.

Outside of the Office

James has always enjoyed the beach, primarily the Outer Banks. Currently James is most active in sailing, but he also enjoys motorboating and any activities on the water. Over the years, James has enjoyed surfing, skiing all over the U.S. and Canada, waterskiing, white water rafting, racket ball and swimming. James’s favorite vacations are bare boat charters and snorkeling in the Caribbean, but he enjoys traveling whenever he gets the chance. He is currently a member at the Portsmouth Boat Club and CE&H Ruritan Club.

Why Alperin Law?

Contemplating retirement, James looked for an affiliation that would provide his clientele with continuity of representation by a firm that is competent and well-respected. James was ecstatic to learn that Scott Alperin was looking to open a Suffolk location to serve his already substantial clientele in Suffolk, Isle of Wight, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth, and had the resources to serve James’s clientele at the location of his former office. James has enjoyed working with Scott, the lawyers, and staff at Alperin Law to such an extent that he remains more active in the practice of law than anticipated, working regularly, but with the ability to take more time away from the office. He was comforted by knowing that Alperin Law had more resources to benefit his clients than ever before.
